The fastest answer to how to get clients as a personal trainer: start with people who already trust you. Offer free form checks or consults to people who see you train, ask current clients for a referral right after a visible win, message past clients with a restart offer, and complete your Google Business Profile so local searches find you. Then reply the same day with a clear package and price.

Getting the enquiry is half the job; converting and keeping the client is the other half, and it is easier with a coaching app like Trainaq. Every plan includes a free, premium-quality client app (iOS and Android), AI food photo logging and a weekly AI client digest. Pro adds leads and follow-ups, and Studio adds an AI Website Builder. Pro is $39/month, or $420/year, for up to 50 clients; Starter is $205/year for up to 10.

Try Trainaq free for 7 days. No card needed.

Below are 15 tactics in four groups, each with a step for this week. We have left out "X% of trainers" figures; results vary too much by city, niche and price.

Set up your coaching system before you chase clients

New clients notice how the first week feels: how fast you reply, how they pay, where their plan lives, whether anyone checks on them. Fix that first.

Trainaq gives you a coach app (iOS and Android), a web dashboard and a free client app in one system. On every plan:

  • Onboarding: intake forms, workout and diet plan builders, and 600+ exercises with 1,600+ HD videos in male and female versions.
  • Coaching: chat, weekly check-ins, a weekly AI client digest and AI food photo logging.
  • Getting paid: memberships, GST invoices, cash and part payments with dues tracking, reminders and PT session booking. In India, clients pay by UPI or card and the money settles to your own bank via Razorpay Route; Trainaq keeps 3.5% + GST per payment, Razorpay's charge included (how payments work). Elsewhere, on Pro and Studio, clients pay through your own Stripe or PayPal, with no Trainaq fee.

Pro adds leads and follow-ups, an AI workout and diet builder, group classes, Google Meet and Calendar, and automated WhatsApp notifications.

Do this week: Set up your packages, intake form and first programme template.

In-gym and local tactics

Slow to scale, but often the fastest route to a first paying client.

1. Offer free form checks on the gym floor

Most members never ask for help, but many welcome one useful cue on a squat, deadlift or row. Keep it to two minutes; if they want more, they will ask.

Do this week: Check with the gym manager, pick two quiet slots and offer one cue to five members per slot. Carry a card or QR code that links to your enquiry page.

2. Complete your Google Business Profile

Searches like "personal trainer near me" show Google Business Profiles. Google says local ranking is based on relevance, distance and prominence (which reflects things like reviews), and that you cannot pay for a better local ranking (Google Business Profile Help).

Do this week: Claim and verify your profile, pick the right category, list services and hours, add five real coaching photos and write a description naming your area and who you help.

3. Ask every happy client for a review

Reviews help people choose you. From your Business Profile on a computer, Google lets you create a review link or QR code to share (Google Business Profile Help).

One rule matters: Google says offering incentives, "like free or discounted goods or services", for reviews is strictly prohibited (Google Business Profile Help). Ask, make it easy, and reply to each review with something specific.

Do this week: Generate your review link and ask your five longest-standing clients for an honest review. No reward attached.

4. Run a small-group starter programme

A four-week beginner strength group lets people try your coaching at a lower price than one-to-one. Some will then want a PT package.

Do this week: Write a one-page outline (who, four sessions, price, start date) and share it on the noticeboard, Instagram and WhatsApp status.

Online and social tactics

Online channels take longer to warm up, but the same content that brings local enquiries is how to get online personal training clients too.

5. Turn Instagram into an enquiry channel

Followers do not pay; enquiries do. Your profile should say in five seconds who you help, where (or "online") and how to start. Use the bio link for one action, such as booking a consult.

Do this week: Rewrite your bio, set a single link, and post one short video answering a question a client asked this month.

6. Put up a simple website with one next step

You need a clear headline, services with "from" prices, a few honest client stories and a form or booking link. Our guide on how to build a personal trainer website covers the pages that matter. On Trainaq's Studio plan, the AI Website Builder generates a premium site you can then edit, and on Pro, enquiries can go into leads and follow-ups so none are forgotten.

Do this week: Draft your homepage (headline, three services, one call to action) and publish the simplest version you can.

7. Set up WhatsApp Business properly

In India and other WhatsApp-heavy markets, many enquiries arrive there first. The free WhatsApp Business app includes a business profile, a catalog for your services, automated greeting and away messages, quick replies, and labels to organise chats for follow-up (WhatsApp Business).

Do this week: Switch to WhatsApp Business, put your packages in the catalog, set a greeting that asks their goal and preferred timing, and label chats "New enquiry", "Consult booked" and "Paid".

8. Answer real questions in short videos

The questions clients ask in sessions are the ones strangers search. "Why do my knees hurt on lunges?" or "How much protein do I need as a vegetarian?" makes a useful 45-second Reel or Short, and shows how you coach.

Do this week: List ten questions clients asked recently, then record three answers in one sitting.

9. Add an online or hybrid package

If you only sell in-person sessions, every client who moves or travels is at risk. A hybrid package (one in-person session a month plus a remote programme and weekly check-ins) keeps them and opens you to people outside your area. For many trainers it is the first step towards an online coaching business.

Sell it as a monthly membership so renewals and dues are tracked for you. In Trainaq, clients in India can pay by UPI or card and the money settles to your bank; elsewhere, on Pro and Studio, they pay through your own Stripe or PayPal.

Do this week: Message clients who paused or moved away and offer the online version at a clear monthly price.

Referrals and retention tactics

Existing clients are your best channel: they stay, and they bring friends.

10. Ask for referrals at the right moment

Ask right after a visible win: a first pull-up, a personal best, a better blood test. Be specific: "Do you know one person who wants what you've just achieved?" Unlike Google reviews, a referral reward (say, a free session for both people) is your own business decision.

Timing is easier when you can see the wins. Weekly check-ins and the weekly AI client digest in Trainaq put each client's week in one place, so you know who just had a good one.

Do this week: List clients who hit a milestone last month and ask each for one introduction.

11. Win back past clients

People stop for ordinary reasons: money, travel, a new job, an injury. Many would return if asked with a reason to restart.

Do this week: Send ten past clients a short personal note offering a fresh assessment and a four-week restart plan.

12. Share client results, with permission

Strength numbers, a first 10K or a client's own words are often more believable than before-and-after photos. Always get written consent, and never share health details without it.

Do this week: Ask two clients if you can share their story and write each up in a few sentences for your site and Instagram.

Partnership tactics

Partnerships put you in front of people who already trust someone else's recommendation.

13. Build a referral loop with physios and dietitians

Physios discharge patients who still need strength work; dietitians see clients who need a training plan. Refer to them when something is outside your scope, and ask them to do the same.

Do this week: Contact two local physios or dietitians and offer a free session so they can see how you work.

14. Offer workshops to local workplaces

Offices and IT parks often want short wellness sessions such as desk mobility or lifting basics. A 30-minute talk puts you in a room of potential clients.

Do this week: Write a one-paragraph workshop offer and send it to three HR or office managers in your network.

15. Join clubs and communities

Run clubs, cycling groups, sports teams and, in India, apartment societies and RWAs all have members with specific goals. Offer a session built for that group, such as strength for runners.

Do this week: Offer one nearby club or residential society a free group session tied to their sport or schedule.

How to convert enquiries into paying clients

Plenty of good leads are lost between "I'm interested" and the first payment.

Reply fast and properly

Someone who messages three trainers often goes with the first useful answer. Reply the same day and ask two questions: what they want to achieve, and when they can train.

Run a short consult call

Fifteen to twenty minutes covers their goal, injuries, schedule and what has stopped them before. Then make one recommendation at one price. Sending a client intake form before the call saves time.

Show clear packages and make paying easy

Two or three packages with clear inclusions (sessions, check-in frequency, nutrition) let people choose instead of negotiate; see our guide to personal training packages and pricing. Then make the payment step easy: a way to pay today beats "transfer it when you can".

Follow up, then follow up again

"Let me think about it" is often genuine. Follow up two or three days later, and again a week after. A lead list with a next-contact date is enough to start; Trainaq Pro includes leads and follow-ups if you would rather not track them by hand.

Keep the clients you win

Every client who stays is one you do not have to replace. Check in weekly (sleep, energy, adherence, one win, one problem), review progress every four to six weeks as the natural moment to renew and ask for a referral, and act on early warning signs: missed sessions and late check-ins often come before a cancellation, and a quick personal message keeps more clients than a discount.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to get your first personal training client?

Start with people who already see you train or work: gym members, friends of past clients, colleagues. A free form check followed by a clear offer usually moves faster than any online channel. Once they say yes, a coaching app such as Trainaq keeps their plan, chat and weekly check-ins in one place from day one.

How do I get online personal training clients with no following?

You do not need a big audience. Offer an online or hybrid package to people who already know you, keep clients who move away on a remote plan, and answer specific questions in short videos. A clear package, a fast reply and a weekly check-in matter more than follower count.

Can I give clients a discount for leaving a Google review?

No. Google's review guidance says offering incentives such as free or discounted services in exchange for reviews is prohibited. Ask every client for an honest review and make it easy with a review link or QR code, but do not attach a reward.

How many clients do I need to run a full-time online coaching business?

It depends on your prices, your weekly coaching hours and how much support each client gets. Work backwards from the income you need and your package prices, then check whether that client count fits your hours.
