# GST on a fitness fee, added, removed and split.

This GST calculator adds GST to a gym, yoga or personal training fee, or takes it out of a price that already includes it. It starts at 5%, the rate for gym, health club, fitness centre and yoga services since 22 September 2025, and splits the tax into CGST and SGST or IGST.

Use the calculator on the page: https://trainaq.com/tools/gst-calculator-fitness. For GST in India only, and not tax advice. Gym, health club, fitness centre and yoga services carry 5% without input tax credit; confirm the rate for your services and your place of supply with your CA. Nothing you enter is saved or sent.

## How do you calculate GST on a gym fee?

Multiply the fee before GST by the rate. At 5%, a ₹2,000 monthly fee carries ₹100 GST, so the client pays ₹2,100. Within your state that ₹100 is ₹50 CGST and ₹50 SGST; across states it is ₹100 IGST. To take GST out of a price of ₹2,100, divide it by 1.05.

- 5% GST on gym, health club, fitness centre and yoga services since 22 Sep 2025
- Add GST to a fee, or remove it from a price that includes it
- CGST and SGST or IGST, rounded to the paisa
- The total in words, in lakh and crore

## How does this GST calculator work?

Choose whether to add GST to a fee or remove it from a price that already includes it, then enter the amount and the rate and say whether the place of supply is in your state. The calculator shows the fee before GST, CGST and SGST or IGST, the GST in all, the total and the total in words.

### 1. Add or remove GST

Add GST when your price is before tax, such as “₹2,000 + GST”. Remove GST when you know what the client paid in all and need the taxable value and the tax for your books or for an invoice.

- Add: total = fee + fee × rate
- Remove: fee = total ÷ (1 + rate)

### 2. Set the rate

The rate starts at 5%, the rate for beauty and physical well-being services, which include gyms, health clubs, fitness centres and yoga. Change it for other services: 18% is the standard rate that most other services carry.

- Any rate from 0 to 40%, to two decimals

### 3. Pick the place of supply

Same state means your business and the place of supply are in one state or union territory: CGST and SGST, half the rate each. Other state means IGST at the full rate. Services you perform at your gym or studio are supplied in your own state.

- In union territories such as Chandigarh, UTGST takes the place of SGST

### 4. Read the result

You get the fee before GST, each tax, the GST in all, the total and the total in words. The tax is rounded half up to the paisa, so CGST and SGST can differ by one paisa when the tax is an odd number of paise.

- Amounts up to ₹100 crore
- Indian digit grouping: ₹1,18,000.00

## Which formulas does the calculator use?

Adding GST multiplies the fee by the rate and adds the result to the fee. Removing GST divides the total by one plus the rate to find the fee before tax, and the tax is what remains. Within a state the tax splits into two halves, CGST and SGST; across states it is all IGST.

- Add GST: `GST = fee × r ÷ 100; total = fee + GST`
- Remove GST: `fee = total × 100 ÷ (100 + r); GST = total − fee`
- Within a state: `CGST = SGST = GST ÷ 2, each at r ÷ 2 %`
- Across states: `IGST = GST, at r %`

- r: the GST rate in percent, 5 for gym, fitness and yoga services
- fee: the taxable value, before GST
- Amounts are rounded half up to the paisa; CGST takes an odd paisa and SGST the rest

## What does 5% GST add to common fitness fees?

Five per cent adds ₹5 to every ₹100 of fee. A ₹2,000 monthly membership becomes ₹2,100, and an ₹18,000 annual one becomes ₹18,900. Within your state CGST and SGST each take half. When the tax runs to an odd number of paise, CGST takes the extra paisa and SGST the rest.

| Fee before GST | GST at 5% | CGST + SGST | Total |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ₹500, a day pass | ₹25.00 | ₹12.50 + ₹12.50 | ₹525.00 |
| ₹2,000, a month | ₹100.00 | ₹50.00 + ₹50.00 | ₹2,100.00 |
| ₹5,500, three months | ₹275.00 | ₹137.50 + ₹137.50 | ₹5,775.00 |
| ₹18,000, a year | ₹900.00 | ₹450.00 + ₹450.00 | ₹18,900.00 |
| ₹999, an odd fee | ₹49.95 | ₹24.98 + ₹24.97 | ₹1,048.95 |

Example fees, not typical prices. Across states the same GST is charged as IGST, for the same total.

## Why is GST on gym and fitness services 5%?

The 56th GST Council meeting on 3 September 2025 cut GST on beauty and physical well-being services, which include gyms, health clubs, fitness centres and yoga, from 18% to 5% without input tax credit. Notification No. 15/2025-Central Tax (Rate) put the cut into force from 22 September 2025 and calls it a mandatory rate.

- Without input tax credit: you can’t claim the GST on goods and services you use to supply these services
- Mandatory: you can’t charge 18% to keep your credit (Ministry of Finance FAQs-2, Q8)
- Online coaching, diet plans and app-only programmes may fall outside this group and carry another rate: ask your CA
- On 8 Oct 2026 the 57th GST Council meeting recommended limited input tax credit in the same line of business for gym and fitness services; it applies only once notified

## How do you know whether to charge CGST and SGST or IGST?

Compare your state with the place of supply. For fitness services the place of supply is where you actually perform them, so sessions at your gym or studio are in your own state: CGST and SGST, even for a member from elsewhere. IGST applies when the place of supply is in another state.

- Training a client at their home in another state: IGST (IGST Act, s. 12(4))
- Online coaching: ask your CA which state is the place of supply
- Most other services: a registered client’s location, or an unregistered client’s address on record (s. 12(2))
- Chandigarh, Lakshadweep, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the other union territories under the UTGST Act: CGST and UTGST

## How do you take GST out of a price that includes it?

Divide the price by one plus the rate. At 5%, a ₹2,100 package is ₹2,100 ÷ 1.05 = ₹2,000 before GST, and the GST is the ₹100 left over. Taking 5% of ₹2,100 gives ₹105, which overstates the tax, because the rate applies to the fee before GST, not to the total.

- At 18%, divide by 1.18: ₹1,180 is ₹1,000 plus ₹180 GST
- The fee is rounded half up to the paisa and the tax is the rest, so the two add up to the price exactly
- Your invoice shows the fee before GST as the taxable value

## FAQ

### Is GST on gym membership included in the price?

It depends on how you quote it. A price “+ GST” is before tax, so 5% goes on top: ₹2,000 + GST is ₹2,100. A price “inclusive of GST” already contains it: ₹2,100 inclusive is ₹2,000 plus ₹100 GST. Either way, your invoice shows the fee before GST and the tax separately.

### Can a gym charge 18% GST instead of 5%?

Not on gym, health club, fitness centre or yoga services supplied since 22 September 2025. The notification calls 5% without input tax credit a mandatory rate, and the Ministry of Finance’s FAQ says providers don’t have the option of 18% with credit. Other things you sell may carry other rates; check each with your CA.

### Why do CGST and SGST sometimes differ by a paisa?

Because the GST is rounded to the paisa first and then split. When the tax is an odd number of paise, the two halves can’t be equal: ₹49.95 splits into ₹24.98 CGST and ₹24.97 SGST. The calculator gives CGST the extra paisa, so the two halves always add up to the tax exactly.

### What is the GST on a ₹1,000 personal training session?

At 5%, the GST is ₹50 and the client pays ₹1,050: ₹25 CGST and ₹25 SGST within your state, or ₹50 IGST across states. That assumes the session is a physical well-being service in group 99972, like training at a gym. If it is coaching delivered online, ask your CA which rate applies.

### Do I charge GST if I’m not registered?

No. A business that isn’t registered can’t collect GST, so give clients a plain bill or receipt with no tax. Registration is required once your aggregate turnover in a financial year passes ₹20 lakh, or ₹10 lakh in some special category states, and you can register voluntarily before that.

### Does this calculator work for GST outside India?

No. It follows India’s GST: its rates, the CGST, SGST and IGST split, and rupees with Indian digit grouping. Other countries’ GST and VAT have their own rates and rules. For a client abroad, an Indian business’s invoice may count as an export of services, which has its own conditions; ask your CA.
